Canal Lands/Features on National Register of Historic Places

The Park District, with the help of the Pickaway County Historical Genealogical Society and other agencies, has succeeded in getting several Ohio-Erie Canal features here in Pickaway County on the National Register of Historical Places. These features include Lock 31 in Millport, the Aqueduct Abutments in Circleville, the Feeder Canal Inlet and the 2.35-mile watered prism at Canal Park. The State Historical Preservation office is hosting an event in June to officially make the awards.

The District is happy to share that outstanding historic preservation achievements in communities across Ohio were honored with the Ohio History Connection’s State Historic Preservation Office Awards on Sat., Oct. 19, 2019. State Historic Preservation Officer Burt Logan presented awards to the recipients during a luncheon at the Ohio History Center in Columbus. The District was one of the groups that was presented an award in the Public Education and Awareness category, for increasing interest in historic preservation. This Award recognizes the extraordinary collaborative partnership of multiple communities and organizations in four counties in south-central Ohio that worked together to achieve the National Register listing of fourteen Ohio & Erie Canal features! We are honored to have been able to be apart of this accomplishment!
